Understanding GST Return Obligations
Every registered business in India is required to periodically submit GST returns detailing sales (outward supplies), purchases (inward supplies), tax collected, and Input Tax Credit (ITC) claimed. Missing statutory deadlines results in cumulative late fees of up to ₹50/day and 18% p.a. interest on net tax liabilities.
Monthly GST Compliance Calendar
| Return Form | Who Must File | Monthly Due Date | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 | Monthly Filers (Turnover > ₹5 Cr) | 11th of every month | Details of outward supplies (B2B & B2C sales) |
| IFF (Optional) | QRMP Scheme Filers | 13th of month 1 & 2 | Invoice Furnishing Facility for B2B invoices |
| GSTR-3B | Regular Monthly Taxpayers | 20th of every month | Summary return with tax payment & ITC claim |
| GSTR-3B (QRMP) | Quarterly Taxpayers (Category 1 States) | 22nd of month following quarter | Quarterly summary return & tax settlement |
| GSTR-3B (QRMP) | Quarterly Taxpayers (Category 2 States) | 24th of month following quarter | Quarterly summary return & tax settlement |
Critical Warning on ITC (Rule 36(4)): You can only claim Input Tax Credit if the respective invoice appears in your GSTR-2B statement. Always reconcile your purchase register with GSTR-2B before filing GSTR-3B.
Late Fees and Penalty Matrix
If you fail to file within the specified due dates, the GST portal automatically calculates penalties as follows:
- Nil Return: ₹20 per day of delay (₹10 CGST + ₹10 SGST), subject to a maximum of ₹500.
- Regular Return with Liability: ₹50 per day of delay (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST).
- Interest on Outstanding Tax: 18% per annum calculated on the net cash liability.
